The Hon. Peter Van Loan, MP for York-Simcoe and Government House Leader, on behalf of Canada’s Environment Minister John Baird, today announced funding for the Maskinonge Adopt-A-Watershed in Keswick.
“Community concern about the Maskinonge River’s health has been increasing,” said Minister Van Loan. “Today’s announcement is a first step on working to reverse the decline of a river under environmental stress”
“The Maskinonge is an important part of Lake Simcoe’s watershed,” said Virginia Hackson, Chair of the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority. “We are pleased to join the federal government on this initiative to improve our environment”
In addition to the federal government, the Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority, the Regional Municipality of York, the Town of Georgina, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources, Friends of the Maskinonge, York Environmental Stewardship and the Town of East Gwillimbury are all supporting the project.
The federal government will be contributing $48,800 from the Federal Government’s Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund – almost two thirds of the total project cost of $77,000.
Projects funded by the Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund are designed to preserve and protect the environment of Lake Simcoe. These projects are part of an overall investment of $30 million over five years, which was announced in February 2008.
